About the Journal

Sublime Porte ( JoSP) is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal dedicated to studies on the transmission of thought. It focuses on the historical transmission, circulation, and interpretation of scientific, philosophical, and artistic productions that constitute the world’s cultural heritage, from the past to the present. In this respect, it is the first journal to focus explicitly on “modes of transmitting thought” worldwide. The journal’s aim is to examine the visual and textual modalities of transmission, socialization of knowledge, as well as the civic and institutional channels through which the rich legacy of the world’s cultural heritage—particularly Ottoman science and thought—has been conveyed. The transfer in question may denote a philosophical perspective, a technical instrument, a translation, a plagiarisation or a notion of social transformation, as well as an architectural transmission that shapes the configuration of the urban fabric.

Sublime Porte is, at its core, a journal of intellectual and history of science. It primarily evaluates studies produced from a historical perspective. At the same time, it embraces an interdisciplinary approach and encourages contributions from the natural and human sciences to the transmission of scientific, philosophical, intellectual, and artistic productions. While Sublime Porte is concerned with any topic related to transmission across the natural and human sciences, it imposes no restriction of historical period or geographical scope. Publishing original and pioneering articles on the transmission of knowledge and thought in Turkish and English in accordance with international standards, the journal also features research articles, translations, document editions, book reviews, and conference reports. It is published twice a year, in June and December.

Journal Theme
The journal traces the transfer of knowledge and ideas from one geography or language to another within the broader heritage of world cultures. It also addresses every form of textual and visual transmission. Whether a recipe, plagiarisation, prescription, book, letter, curriculum,  forms of punishment, modes of belief, and mythology, painting, miniature, technical device, or medical formulation —any piece of material, information or idea, whether in the natural sciences or the humanities, that has been displaced and transmitted constitutes the subject matter of the journal, insofar as it concerns modes of transmission.
